Tocilizumab is quite a word to get your mouth around but this drug will now be available to thousands of people in the hospital with Covid19. The clinical tests have revealed that Tocilizumab is a live-saver!
Tests have shown that the drug has reduced risk of death by 14% and reduced the time spent in hospital. It is hoped that the roll out of the drug will help the NHS reduce pressures on treatment and help thousands more patients have a positive outcome.
Tocilizumab (say it as ‘toss-ill-izi-mab ) is an anti inflammatory monoclonal antibody which is also used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. It is one of many anti-inflammatory drugs which have been researched and tested, so far this one has had very good results.
Health and Social Care Secretary Matt Hancock said:
Today’s excellent news is further proof the UK is at the forefront of the global mission to find safe and effective treatments for this terrible virus.
I want to thank all those who have played a part in generating these tremendous results – from the British scientists and researchers behind the trial, to the thousands of patients who took part across the country.
The Government is working closely with Roche the manufacturer to ensure that it will be available in all NHS hospitals as soon as possible. Updated guidance on the drug is to be issued to clinicians on Monday so treatment can start quickly.
The end of Covid19, these horrid restrictions and repeated lockdowns are getting ever closer – hurray!
